NEW BAZAAR SHIPWRECKS CRICKET CLUB.

Sulwath Stunners
(Dumfries & Galloway Standard 2nd September 2005)

New Bazaar Shipwrecks NUNHOLM was the place to be for some exciting 20 over cricket in the Sulwath Brewers Shield final between New Bazaar Shipwrecks and Loreburn Centre St. Michael's Youth. In perfect conditions, the New Bazaar Shipwrecks captain, K. Bellwood won the toss and elected to bat. What followed was a splendid batting performance by his team who scored at over eight runs an over to post a total of 161 runs.
Shipwrecks got off to a flying start with S. Byers who has had a great season for the team, scoring a quickfire 26 not out. But when P. McBride bludgeoned a fast 27 not out, the Shipwrecks really took control. He was well supported by E. Sutton 26 not out and C. Taylor 25 not out. The best of the St. Michael's Youth bowlers was C. Brockwell with 1-14.
Facing a score of 161 was always going to be a challenge. This was one of the highest ever scored at Nunholm in a match between midweek league teams, but St. Michael's Youth had a strong team out, fielding several senior first team players. Commendably, they gave responsibility with bat and ball to some of their young players, notably C. Brockwell who scored 16. The Australian, M. McBeath hit an excellent 28 not out and D. Fallas scored quick runs at the end. In the end they totalled 118 for 9, well short of the Shipwrecks total. The Shipwrecks bowling and fielding was tight. Their best bowlers were L. Eustace 3-16 and E. Sutton 3-25. This win has capped a splendid season for the New Bazaar Shipwrecks, who are founder members of the Dumfries midweek league. This was their first win in either shield or league.
