Italy - Puglia

This is a series of watercolours from a painting holiday near Ostuni right on the heel of Italy. You may recognise some scenes as this particular holiday at Il Collegio, was featured on tv's Grand Designs Abroad. This is a particularly unspoilt part of Italy, where vast groves of ancient and gnarled olive trees reach down to the sea. The olives used to be stored in underground caverns where workers had to live until the work was completed. To ensure the safety of the olive harvest, sentry posts were set up to guard the precious crop. Enzo lives and farms next to Il Collegio using methods handed down through generations.

If you have ever watched the Grand Designs
Abroad programme featuring the couple
building a place in Puglia, you may well
recognise this scene. Mine was the second
room and very beautiful it was.
 

The Sentry Box

In days gone by the olive harvest in Puglia
lasted some months and the workers slept
alongside the harvest in cellars, together
with the donkeys. To ensure the harvest was
not stolen there were sentry boxes placed
above ground. Here you can see such a
sentry box and an air hole.
